Hey all! Just filling you in on what’s going on, on the water. I’ve recently floated the Roaring Fork, and lower Colorado from Glenwood all the way to Silt. All water systems are fishing extremely well and are starting to get buggy. Lots of midge and baetis are starting to show up. Size 18,20 midge and bwo nymph patterns are working really well. I’m even having some luck on bigger caddis and stone fly nymphs in some areas. I really like floating these sections this time of year for finding solitude and unpressured fish. It’s a great time of year to catch that fish of a lifetime.
Wading the Eagle can be a little technical in some spots because of 2 things. It is low and clear flowing around 130 cfs at Gypsum. There has been a lot of pressure due to such a mild winter. But the bite is really good on fine tippet and small size 18-22 nymphs. At warmer times of the day when the bugs are emerging fish are boiling on the surface and will eat small dry flies and emergers. Makes for really exciting sight fishing. Also a great time of year to catch that fish of a lifetime or new PR.
Furthermore on the Eagle, Fork, and Colorado we need to be watching out for spawning redds. Water temps are close to getting above that 42 degree mark triggering the rainbows and cutthroat to spawn. So we need to be conscious of not walking on redds, and not fishing spawning areas.
