Dear Valued Clients,
We’ve been guiding the rivers of the Vail Valley since 2008, and we’ve seen our fair share of challenges before. This letter is our honest assessment of the 2026 season, what it means for your time on the water, and why we’re confident we can still have a great season given a few changes— no matter what the conditions bring.
THE SNOWPACK SITUATION
This winter was historic for all the wrong reasons. Colorado’s snowpack hit record lows, with the Vail Mountain SNOTEL site logging its worst readings in 47 years of measurement — well below the drought winters of 2012 and 2018. For freestone rivers like the Eagle, that means earlier runoff, lower summer flows, and warmer afternoon water temperatures than we’d like. We’re not going to sugarcoat it.
But we’ve navigated this before. In both 2012 and 2018, the guides who knew where to be and when to be there had their clients into fish consistently. Fish early, fish smart, fish with someone who knows these rivers — and you’ll have an outstanding day.
OUR HOME WATER PLAN
For July and August on the Eagle River and the Vail Valley areas, we are moving to half-day early morning trips, starting between 6 and 7 AM. We’ll fish the optimal window and be off the water before afternoon heat creates stress for fish. When temperatures push above 65°F, trout suffer. Above 68°F, catch-and-release carries real mortality risk. The health of the fishery always comes first — and frankly, early morning fishing on low, clear water is some of the finest dry fly angling you’ll ever experience.
Every client who books a half-day trip will have first right of refusal to upgrade to a full day if conditions allow. We monitor flows and temperatures daily and will always give you the best option available.
THE FLEXIBILITY ADVANTAGE
Here’s what truly sets Minturn Anglers apart in a year like this: we have options, and we’ll use every one of them on your behalf.
Our guided water portfolio gives us unmatched flexibility across the region. On the Western Slope, we run everywhere from the tailwaters of the Frying Pan River to the Roaring Fork and the upper Colorado. We also hold exclusive access to private Arkansas River water for groups seeking an uncrowded, unpressured blue-ribbon experience.
It is also worth mentioning for folks that want to get out and experience something different, from our Denver locations, we have direct access to the South Platte at Deckers, the Dream Stream below Spinney Mountain Reservoir, and private access to three renowned ranches along the North Fork of the South Platte.
BOOKING YOUR TRIP
For our clients who have counted on us year in and year out, we want to ensure we can get you out on the water but as mentioned things will be a little tough and last minute bookings will most likely not be available this season. July and August slots are limited by design to accommodate the 2026 conditions, and private water bookings go fast. Book early to secure your dates, your preferred guide, and your right of first refusal to upgrade.
