Low water conditions have created some of the best wade fishing opportunities of the season across Colorado. On the Eagle River, water temperatures below Wolcott are climbing into the mid to upper 60s by around 2:00 p.m., making early mornings the prime time to be on the water. Plan to fish early and wrap up before the hottest part of the day to minimize stress on trout. Due to the lower flows, anglers can now access runs and seams that are normally too deep or swift during runoff. If you’re looking to stay on the water after lunch, head to higher-elevation mountain streams where cooler temperatures keep trout active. Alpine lakes are also heating up and fishing well, offering another excellent option for afternoon adventures.

Summer bug activity is picking up across the Eagle Valley, and trout are beginning to key in on terrestrials. Ants, beetles, and small grasshoppers are becoming increasingly important food sources, making them great choices for dry fly anglers. Downstream around Gypsum, Trico hatches are beginning to show, while caddis and mayflies continue to provide excellent morning fishing throughout the Eagle River. Above Edwards, expect productive evening hatches, with the Eagle River seeing the strongest caddis activity and the Gore Creek drainage producing consistent mayfly action. A dry-dropper rig remains one of the most effective ways to cover water, but don’t overlook a double dry setup when fish are feeding aggressively on the surface.
Meanwhile, the Front Range continues to provide outstanding fishing opportunities. Tailwaters such as Deckers and Cheesman Canyon benefit from consistently cold water temperatures, allowing trout to remain active throughout the day even during the summer heat. Flows into Deckers remain in great shape, and insect activity has been exceptional. Anglers can expect steady caddis and Pale Morning Dun (PMD) hatches, with hopper fishing becoming more productive each day.
Whether you’re exploring the Eagle River’s newly accessible wade water or heading to the dependable tailwaters along the Front Range, Colorado is offering excellent dry fly fishing and some of the best wade fishing conditions of the summer. With water temperatures continuing to rise, these conditions won’t last forever. Several of our days are fully booked, so don’t wait- get your fishing trip with Minturn Anglers booked now!
